Suction (Oral and Nasopharyngeal)

To provide underpinning knowledge associated with best practice for performing safe and effective suctioning of the upper respiratory tract airways, including a simulated practical experience in a controlled environment to assist the development of competent suctioning skills.

To raise awareness of the legal implications of the NMC and organisational policies regarding suctioning and promote the safety and well-being of all patients who require suctioning.


By the end of the course, candidates will be able to:

  • Discuss legal and professional responsibilities associated with performing suctioning in line with local and national guidance
  • Follow procedures for gaining consent and correct documentation
  • Describe relevant anatomy
  • List indications and contraindications for suctioning
  • Understand the need to manage health and safety risk
  • Identify and discuss the range of available equipment
  • List the range of observations and their importance that are necessary before, during and after the suction procedure
  • Outline appropriate methods of communication and correct positioning of patients
  • Demonstrate practical ability in performing suctioning including correct procedures for minimising infection
