Infection Prevention and Control

To provide an understanding of the rationale for preventing the transmission of infections in care settings and give an overview of procedures that will reduce the spread of infection.

To promote the safety and well-being of all patients who live in care settings.

DESCRIPTION

By the end of the course, candidates will be able to:

  • Give examples of legislation relating to IPC
  • List different types of infection and describe how they are spread
  • Describe the concept and importance of “breaking the chain of infection”
  • List the different elements of Standard Infection Control Precautions and discuss their importance
  • Maintain personal and environmental hygiene
  • Demonstrate the correct procedure for effective hand decontamination
  • Describe the correct procedure for putting on and removing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
