Medication Management

To provide the candidates with the underpinning knowledge and skills to administer, store and document all prescribed medications in a safe manner and to develop better awareness of why errors, occur? in order to prevent them.

To promote the safety and well-being of all patients who receive medications in a care setting.

DESCRIPTION

By the end of the course, candidates will be able to:

  • Discuss what is meant by responsibility, accountability and confidentiality in relation to handling of medicines
  • List their responsibilities in relation to handling medications
  • List examples of relevant legislation
  • Discuss what is meant by the ‘6 Rights’ for safe administration
  • Describe the correct procedure for the supply, storage, administration, and recording of medications
  • Identify reasons why clients might refuse medication
  • Explain what is meant by ‘covert medication’
  • List examples of adverse drug reactions and know what actions to take if they should occur
  • Discuss the different types of medication error, what causes them and what actions need to be taken
  • List examples of drug information sources
