Promotion of Continence and Catheter Care

To provide underpinning knowledge associated with best practice for promoting continence and supporting clients with incontinence and provide underpinning knowledge associated with best practice for performing safe and effective catheter care.

To promote the safety and well-being of all patients who require continence support and catheter care.

DESCRIPTION

By the end of the course, candidates will be able to:

  • Describe anatomy of urinary and digestive systems
  • Understand the need for catheterisation
  • Identify and discuss the range of available equipment
  • Discuss infection risk and how to minimise it
  • Describe hygiene and daily care routines
  • Identify which groups of people are at risk of being incontinent
  • Explain different types of urinary and faecal incontinence
  • Describe the different categories of the Bristol Stool Chart
  • List strategies to support people with incontinence
  • Identify what types of treatment may be available
  • Recognise how severe cognitive impairment can impact on incontinence
